Kendir is a type of thread produced from the hemp plant. Despite being an industrially developed city, Gaziantep has preserved the long-standing tradition of Kendir production, which continues in caves beneath the city’s residential areas. Once a thriving craft with production taking place in nearly 10 caves, Kendir is now on the verge of becoming a lost trade due to advancing technology, with only two caves still actively producing it.
